Okay, so what are we actually talking about when we talk about trends?

At the most basic level, a trend is just a general direction in which something is developing or changing.

It's a pattern or a shift in attitudes, behaviors, or consumer preferences.

But in publishing, trending can mean two very different things.

On one hand, it can signal a massive macro shift in culture, like a book or an intellectual property, generating huge cross-market exposure.

leading to major film or TV adaptations.

On the other hand, a trend can last exactly one week and be a total flash in the pan on TikTok or Instagram.

To make sense of this, we have to look at the four publishing trends that influence our multi-billion dollar industry.

So we have number one, market trends.

This is the pure economics in the business side.

This is the flow of money.

This is what is influencing overall retail activity.
