Virginia voters may soon decide whether to approve a redrawn congressional map that could favor Democrats.

The Democratic-controlled state Senate advanced a proposed constitutional amendment Friday that would allow mid-decade redistricting as part of a broader national fight over House maps.

Lawmakers have not released a redrawn map yet, but say voters will see one before a likely April referendum.

Virginia Democrats argue they cannot afford to stand by while Republican-led states redraw maps to their advantage.

Republicans say doing so would undermine the state's push for fair districts.
