But I actually find it very grating when there is no time taken to understand, like, the root emotional and spiritual and practical reasons for nimbyism, where I'm like, Americans have never been more unstable.

Most Americans have a lot, if not all, of their retirement in their home values.

There is a little bit of a prisoner's dilemma here where it's like, yeah, people are self-interested and we should talk about that and make sure that someone's self-interest doesn't hurt someone else's ability to find

And we should also address the fact that like we have an obsession and an investment in our home values that other countries don't have.

Other people can live in homes without it being the primary vehicle for their safety and security into their final years of life.

And that is not the case in America,

have, if you're lucky, you have a 401k, and then you have your home value.

And for people who have been lucky enough to buy into the American housing system, that's their retirement.

And so there is an element of empathy and understanding that you have to have, and also an understanding of why people are so terrified of the system changing.

It's because they feel like all of their stability and security relies on them riding out the system that they bought into, and it just feels negligent to not acknowledge that.

deep-pocketed donors, and political action committees to invest in promising candidates over the long term, the establishment of think tanks and policy networks to turn political ideas into actionable programs, a rising political party able to consistently win over multiple electoral constituencies, a capacity to share political opinion both at the highest levels, the Supreme Court, and across popular print and broadcast media, and a moral perspective able to inspire voters with visions of the good life.
