The essential spirit of that convention was compromise.

I admire these men enormously just for that reason, that they understood that politics was a game of compromise if you had a goal.
Along with the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights established the principles of our society.
Some of these rights are less important than that first one and certainly less controversial than the second one.
But it is an assumption of American culture that the Bill of Rights is a sacred statement of what we believe in.
You have to admire Madison's recognition of the Bill of Rights.
It was more than just to calm down the fears of some people.
It was to establish what our country stood for.
And for that alone, we should admire him.
