Well, Are You Dancing?
A show band story.
It's a play with music written by myself and my best friend, Helen Spring.
It's set in 1960s Donegal during Ireland's vibrant show band era.
And the story follows a young man by the name of Tommy O'Neill who
a shy, unassuming young man who finds himself unwittingly at the helm of an up-and-coming show band.
And as his star rises, we see his struggles, both professionally and personally, and all set against the cultural backdrop of 1960s Ireland.
No, no, I didn't.
So obviously the show required an awful lot of research.
So myself and Helen now are too young to remember the days.
But as you know, it's very recent history.
So we had loads of firsthand accounts to draw from as part of our research.
And we actually started at the very top with the late, great Jimmy McGee, who, as you know, was prolific during that era.
He was a very close family friend of my husband's.
So I had access to Jimmy for hours on end when it came about in 2018 when we had decided we wanted to write the play based in this era.
And he was so excited about the concept.
So Jimmy would sit back for hours and regale you with tales from every perspective, the industry side, the general side.
And then he'd stop every so often and belt out a verse of Make Me an Island.
Even in a restaurant, he didn't care who was watching.
