I think the way that most people would think of qipao probably is along the lines of the qipao seen in In the Mood for Love, the Wong Kar Wai movie.
In the year 2000, that was the first time I'd ever seen or been inspired by Chi Pao.
I was in that film.
Covering a lot of the kind of fashion industry and consumer industry, what people are buying and not buying.

She's saying in many ways it's more appropriate for Western women to wear them because of their shape, because they have like a curvy chest and a curvy bum.

After the fall of the Qing in 1911, this is what young women started wearing.
And it was like a copy of what the male intellectuals were wearing.
shaking off the dynastic tradition of the patriarchal society they'd been living under.
And it was a signal of their independence and modernity.
And then eventually the tunic got more form-fitting and the trousers went away.
And they just kept getting lighter and lighter and tighter and tighter and more and more colorful and playing with different lengths and embroidery and materials until like 20s and 30s.
It's just a way to be able to move in this tight, tight qipao.
This was their version of modern that they wanted in 1930 when they wanted to go out, they wanted to party.
Like 1930s Shanghai would have been just the most fun time to be living in Shanghai.
