President Trump said today that he had a quote, very productive call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and claimed he convinced Israel to hold off on planned strikes in Beirut amid rising tensions with Hezbollah.
Quote, there will be no troops going to Beirut, Trump wrote.
adding that Hezbollah has also agreed that all shooting will stop.
The threat of Israeli strikes in Beirut led to Iranian state-linked media reporting that Tehran is suspending talks with the United States.
The IRGC also threatened to attack northern Israel if it went through with the strikes.
Shortly after speaking to Trump, Netanyahu released a statement warning that Israel remains prepared to strike terror targets in the Lebanese capital if Hezbollah continues attacking Israeli civilians.
Netanyahu said, quote, Tonight I spoke with President Trump and told him that if Hezbollah does not cease attacking our cities and citizens, Israel will attack terror targets in Beirut.
And he added that Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon will continue as planned.
The most noteworthy win for Trump is that according to the White House readout of the meeting, President Xi agreed that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon.
The Chinese also agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened without any
any restrictions or tolls from Iran.
President Trump could also be close to a big victory in trade as well, after the Chinese expressed interest in buying more oil from the United States to cut reliance on the Middle East.
According to a Chinese readout of the meeting, Xi's chief concern is Taiwan.
On that, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S.
policy has not changed.
The Trump administration avoided drawing a hard line today on when the U.S.
might renew its assault on Iran.
