And people think that if small business says this is good for our communities, this is good for our families, that carries a certain moral authority too.
My challenge to you would be to remember it's not going to be very persuasive to take in data that show that 85% of people support a given policy.
It's going to be far more persuasive to take in data that show that 65% of people think we could actually get this done.
Yes, so a couple of things I would say.
First of all, people are bringing this skepticism that we talked about before.
That skepticism, people are really hurting individually right now.
People are very, very pessimistic about the economy.
Over half of voters don't have $500 in savings.
People are really up against the wall.
They're really, really focused on the rising prices of things, affordability crisis, and they're not necessarily clear that our policies are going to help that, particularly in the short run.
But people also...
think that they are unlikely to personally benefit from the policies.
Part of that is how we talk about the policies.
And secondly, part of that is that they just think in general, it's a good day when the government hasn't done anything bad to you.
And that has particularly turned cattywampus because the people that believe most in government are now out of regard.
The one thing I would say is that people are much, much more confident about what can be done at the local level.
So something that is local.
Two, looking at something that is inclusive.
People are not particularly interested in targeted programs because, again, remember that people are very, very skeptical that they are going to benefit.
Or if the program is targeted, they want to know that they might someday, if they have a need, fall into that targeted group.
