It's bad to plagiarize and she shouldn't have done it.
But the really embarrassing thing about Claudine Gay was the work that she published under her own name, which was entirely worthless.
And the same is true here.
We're not talking here about somebody following in the footsteps of, say, Sir Isaac Newton, perhaps Cambridge's most famous alumnus who has been plagiarizing work.
We're talking about somebody who is obsessed with race.
who talks about whiteness and blackness as if they're serious concepts, who doesn't look at human beings as human beings, but as members of groups whose language is inscrutable.
He was much preferable, I suppose, when he couldn't speak.
So this is more than a story about plagiarism, I think.
This is a story about fraud.
Now, of course, having been to Oxford, I should at this point make lots of jokes about Cambridge, as is our want.
But this is far beyond Cambridge.
This is a problem in academia in general at the moment, and he exemplifies it.
So perhaps he's the latest person to be caught.
But there is, unfortunately, within the academic sphere, much less interest in the truth than there should be, and much less interest in useful inquiry than there should be, and a great celebration of people's immutable characteristics and their ability to put out a whole bunch of guff.
And this has blown up because he is all three at once.
He's a plagiarist, he's a fraud, and...
his work is useless.
And the sooner that we recognize that, the better our universities will be.
