And I think that's so appropriate because a bridge is a place where you can experiment a little bit.

You can like try things out musically.

You can stretch the limits of what a song can do.

And in this case, it almost introduces like a song within the song.

It's so expansive and rich.

Yeah.

And what it does for the listener is it really brings you deeper into the world of the song.

It makes you more invested in a lot of ways.

If the Beatles help set a new standard for what this part of a song can do, making it more epic and experimental, when we cast around for examples from the last, say, 20 years of pop music, we find some really interesting approaches.

I'd like to propose that we can think about bridges not just as this like, locational meaning within a song, you know, it comes right before the final chorus, but actually as what they do to the song itself, like how they change it in some way.

And the first category I propose is bridges that change the meaning of the song in some way.

And I have a couple examples that might surprise you.

The first is one of my favorite hits of the 21st century, a little song by Beyonce called Single Ladies.

You know the chorus like the back of your hand, Charlie?

All the single ladies.

And here's the bridge.

I've heard this song so many times.

I don't think I ever have thought much about the bridge, but there's a lot happening here.
