So I started looking around for the guy on the jet ski and they were on different boards.

So they were quite a way behind me at this point.

They were not an option.

and so i just started signaling to the lifeguards trying to get their attention get the shark alarm on because it felt like so long before the shark alarm went off and clear the water and maybe they could get a power craft or an armada of people on boards essentially something that could just scare this thing off because i felt like i was as i said not going to impact this shark state of mind at all i was just going what do i do what do i do what do i do um

obviously all I wanted to do was go to the shore and yeah, just kind of battling against that obligation of like, if I go in, there'll be no one here and she'll be on her own.

Yeah, once the situation changed from there just being a shark in the water, which is something I was pretty familiar with, to there was an attack going on, I felt pretty helpless, especially seeing the size of the shark and just seeing its behavior, knowing that this thing's not going to care about me being there.

Whenever I'd previously seen sharks, you go, there's a fright, and then you get out of the water and you feel safe, and then you can kind of admire how

smoothly they move through the water and just how impressive an animal they are and i've always had the respect for the fact that it is their home we can't and it is it's their playground like that's the attitude i have when i go into the ocean it's their home yeah absolutely um so it's kind of my job to reduce the risks when i can but on this day it seemed like the risks were as low as you could get um

And coming back to just seeing an animal that powerful, it was just shocking, I guess.

I don't have many great words to describe it.

It completely changed my state of mind and felt like there was nothing I could do.

Despite being not a small person and on a really big piece of equipment, I just knew that it wouldn't care.

yeah i like to think of that as a only an option once i'm in its mouth kind of option i'm not going to go actively up and try and punch it no definitely not there's a lot of people you hear divers especially talk about looking at the shark and keeping your eyes on it and there definitely are people out there that had so many interactions with shark the people that just free dive with them all the time that can recognize the differences in behavior and know when they're just curious and know how to prevent aggressiveness but i am

I don't think I'd ever be in that calm of a state of mind to make that kind of decision.

I think if I was in the worst case scenario, definitely I'd like to think that I'd start going for the nose or the gills or the eyes, but I don't ever want to be in that situation.

It kind of got more and more aggressive.

Leah was getting dragged about a lot and then there was a lot of blood in the water.

And she got taken under.

And that was when I really went, what do I do now?

I couldn't even see her because the water had become so dirty.
