Not everyone agrees with GFMS on this. matched

Estimates vary hugely from 150,000 metric tonnes to 2.5 million. matched

But why don't we know? matched

We asked Jan Scoils from Gold Investors, the real asset company. matched

Yes, GFMS, for example, come to their figure by looking at how much has been mined. matched

They have production figures for the last 50 years or so, and they think the records for the 500 years before that are pretty good. matched

But the figure for the amount of gold mined for the 5,000 years before 1492, when Columbus sailed, is a bit of a guess. matched

And so James Turk's estimate for the amount of gold in the world is 155,000 tonnes, 16,000 tonnes lower than the GFMS figure. matched

This doesn't have much effect on our supervillain's gold cube, but that small chunk would be worth a fair bit, $950 billion at today's prices. matched

But some, like Jan Scoils, think both estimates are too low. matched

While she doesn't have an exact number, she says there are some things that just don't add up. matched
