It passes the Bechdel test, and as well as winning Best Picture, it won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
And yet, the script shows that women are only talking for around a quarter of the time.
The film Gladiator has one strong female character, Lucilla, the emperor's daughter.
Around 15% of the script is spoken by a woman, but it completely fails the Bechdel test.
That's because Lucilla is the only female character named in the cast.
Even the gladiator's wife is only called Maximus's wife, and she just mainly waves from a distance.
And what about this year, 2018?
Around a third of the nominations failed the Bechdel test.
My colleague Sarah was really perplexed when she took a look at them.
So more than half of the winners of Best Picture do not pass what seems like a pretty simple test.
Can you imagine the reverse?
A film that doesn't feature two men talking to each other about something unrelated to a woman?
This is April Rain.

Although, ironically, on the one occasion that the Oscar for Best Director went to a woman, Catherine Bigelow, her film, The Hurt Locker, fails the Bechdel test.
Despite that, perhaps we should be testing for who is behind the camera.
A few years ago, Holly created the F rating.
She wanted a way to highlight for audiences when a film is written or directed by a woman.
If it also features a strong female cast, it's triple rated.
And this doesn't just go for women.
