So, Tim, David is on £50,000 a year.

He has a wife who stays at home and looks after their two toddlers.

In order to work out where his salary fits in compared to other 43-year-old males, I contacted Richard Dickens, Professor of Economics at the University of Sussex.

Yes, I did.

And not surprisingly, he was pretty chuffed.

But Tim, as much as we like to make our listeners happy, Professor Dickens says the ASH numbers just don't show the whole picture.

How is David, our listener on £50,000, doing if you actually look at his total household income?

And then David was very specific that he wanted to be compared to fellow males 43 years old.

I broke it as gently as I could.

It does make you more average, but actually what's happened there is that your two young toddlers and that your wife stays at home looking after them and doesn't contribute to the household income has made a massive difference in comparison to you with other 40- to 50-year-old males.
