So talking about charity scams, do you remember the big charity scams boom of the 90s?

I think it's just the memory of all the sad commercials.

Do you remember by any chance the United Way scandal of the 90s?

No, tell me about this.

So they had all these commercials.

I'm pretty sure they had billboards.

I don't know if this is like a Mandela effect.

I vaguely remember this, but I do know that it was everywhere and they had workplace donation drives and like partnerships with major companies and they were running PSAs.

It was one of those organizations like you just trusted.

And the head of it, William something, was using the donated money for like personal stuff.

It was like luxury travel gifts, funding his lifestyle.

And this scandal shook everyone's trust in big name charities.

So in my family, I just remember we were always skeptical of the things that were on TV because people could just be like jacking your wallets and stuff.

So professional charities, as we know today, have been around since the mid 1700s.

People have probably had scammy charities for just as long.

Charities were mainly run through religious organizations before that.

During the Enlightenment era, philanthropic and charitable groups started popping up.

Charities were historically about helping working class people in horrible conditions be uplifted.
