I've been talking to Toby Cadman, a British international human rights lawyer, about whether there could be a legal case against asthma. matched

So it just wasn't realistic to invest time and money in a case where there was no real chance of getting a defendant in the dock. matched

But here's the most interesting thing, Toby told me. matched

It's something that hadn't occurred to me. matched

The International Criminal Court, the ICC, the world's court for prosecuting individuals accused of the worst crimes, like war crimes and crimes against humanity, it only has jurisdiction over countries that have joined its treaty. matched

Syria never did, so the ICC can't open a case against Bashar al-Assad. matched

Asthma though, she's a British citizen, and Britain has signed up to the ICC Convention, and so technically the court does have jurisdiction over her, no matter where her crimes were committed. matched

Actually, I'm surprised that Astma hasn't lost her citizenship, especially given the fact that other British women have had theirs taken away for what feels like a lot less. matched
