So we're gonna give the commission a little background on the definition of the objective design standards based on Canafor California state law. low-confidence

Uh why should jurisdictions like us have objective design standards or like how staff calls it, ODS? low-confidence

Uh the applicability of these standards low-confidence

And then before we go into talking about the draft document, we'll just discuss the staff's work plan and how it's gonna be broken into two phases. low-confidence

Then we'll have a discussion pretty much uh low-confidence

And then lastly we'll talk about uh next steps with the Commission. low-confidence

So uh big thing here in front of you is the official definition under government code section of the California um land use thing law. low-confidence

Pretty much stating what uh objective designer standards mean. low-confidence

So these are standards that involve no personal or subjective judgment by public official and are uniformly verifiable by reference to an external and uniform benchmark or criterion available and nullable by both the development applicant or proponent. low-confidence

Um so big takeaway of this is that is the idea of objective versus subjective. low-confidence

And as you may have known, as you've seen have developments come through in the past, a lot of times uh because of discretionary processes, uh either you know uh the commission or staff is able to uh have some um subjective standards based on you know case basically. low-confidence

And as I will be mentioning in the next future slides, um certain state project certain state laws uh pretty much streamline development and require certain standards that are being used for review. low-confidence

Um so based on that, uh the Santa Clara housing element does have a policy to ensure that the city has objective design standards when we're reviewing the streamlined housing developments. low-confidence
