Now, are they good?
They can be.
The biggest thing about a bullpen day is and why they've been used, especially in the playoffs in the past, is rather than six innings of one guy where he's seen the lineup multiple times, if you have enough off days and you have enough arms you trust to go in and kind of
let it sing, gas it out for an inning at a time, you know, ERA and other stats from relievers are generally a little bit better because they can go in and just optimize.
You can optimize the matchups and the lineup pockets.
The other downside I will point out, Sarah, is that, and I did this as an exercise ahead of the ALDS game where the Jays did a bullpen day.
If things go well, a bullpen day is fairly easy to manage.
We lined it up where this guy's going to get this pocket.
Okay, they got a couple lefties here.
That's where Flu Hardy will come in.
Okay, they got a couple righties here.
That's where Braden Fisher will come in.
We'll open with this guy because that's the top of their lineup.
That gets way more difficult if even one guy has a bad outing because then you're playing from behind.
Guys are coming in without clean innings.
Maybe Mason Flewharty can't wait till that lefty pocket because you need him earlier.
Maybe Braden Fisher can't wait for that righty pocket because you need him in an emergency here.
So the downside...
If it's snowballs away from you is pretty significant.
In addition to the bullpen toll that you mentioned, but it's a good question because the Jays have been very effective with them over the last couple of years when they've needed to, including three and one in the Spencer miles bulk days, we'll see if they can do it again with two TBDs on the docket for this weekend series.
