The ban targets consumer-grade routers used to connect computers and smart devices to the Internet.
The Federal Communications Commission gives two reasons.
One, protecting the supply chain of equipment necessary for the U.S.
economy, infrastructure, and national defense.
And two, security gaps in routers that could be used for espionage, theft, network disruptions, and attacks on households.
The ban applies to new models, not anything already authorized for sale or in use.
It's unclear whether routers sold by American companies manufactured overseas are included.
There's an exemption for routers given conditional approval by the Departments of War or Homeland Security deemed to not pose unacceptable risks.

President Trump won't be in Florida for the special election Tuesday.
He could have voted early in person when he was there.
