You want to see that they are not the great team that won the last two World Cups and that there is a real possibility of a new winner being etched onto that cup from the northern hemisphere, can we say?

The French will believe they can.

And when they play South Africa at the start of the November test, that will be a brilliant match.

And the French will be examining every single thing you do to make life difficult for the South Africans.

And that's why, as I said before, that this is why it's such a fascinating series.

It's going to show weaknesses and strengths in both squads.

And it's whether you can improve the areas where you're weak in 12 months of the World Cup or whether they can be exposed again in November.

Well, quite honestly, we thought we'd seen the end of this sort of tour.

And it was a great sadness for those of us who've been on tours like this and have been on great Lions tours where you turn up

and play against the best players of that provincial region.

And of course, that's not happening anymore because they're not released.

But at least, you know, you're playing those teams and you're getting like a Lions tour, which had to become an eight or nine match tour, depending, you know, whether it's COVID or whether they can fit another game in and they invent.

But it's still not an old Lions tour.

This is as near as we're coming, going all the way back to 96, where you actually get the chance

to see two brilliant international teams playing a series of test matches against each other, both at altitude and at sea level, and everything will be left out there.

The warm-up game is fine.

They'll serve a purpose, but they don't have that bite

and that energy and that threat that it used to be on a Lions tour of New Zealand where you'd come up against Canterbury and everybody's saying, oh, my hamstring's gone a bit.

Ain't chance of sitting this one out.

There were certain matches you didn't want to play in, playing Northern Transvaal.
