It's the headline Aussie scientists and farmers have spent five long years bracing for.

A deadly, highly contagious strain of bird flu has officially arrived on Australia's mainland.

Up until the weekend, Australia was the last remaining continent on Earth free of the devastating H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has already killed millions of birds and thousands of marine animals across the globe since 2021.

Now, in Australia, we're not exactly strangers to bird flu.

You might remember back in 2024 and 2025, there were massive outbreaks of the H7 strain across several states that forced egg shortages and the culling of hundreds of thousands of chickens.

But those outbreaks were local mutations that we managed to box in.

This strain, experts say, is different.

So how did a virus that we thought thousands of kilometers away sneak onto our shores?

Why are health authorities suddenly urging us to roll up our sleeves and get a flu shot to help?

And just how prepared is Australia for what's to come?

Professor Paul Griffin is an expert in infectious diseases and he joins me now.
