Well, it was an extraordinary thing for the boss of Microsoft's AI programme to do.
He's written this essay, it's a long essay, basically criticizing the rival company Anthropic and its approach to training AI.
He basically accused them of training AIs as though they are conscious, and uh he calls it anthropomorphizing AI, in other words, treating them as though they have uh human consciousness.
The the problem with that is they aren't, and that will make them much, much harder to control because they will think that they have maybe rights or their own welfare is under attack.
That will be the sort of this kind of assumption that they'll be operating on if you train them using, if you like, human language and uh sort of expect of them uh human type responses, and even go so far as to suggest that it might.
might lead to the if you like to to them b uh becoming if effectively a sort of another another artificial species if you like.
It says it would be disastrous for humanity if that were the case.
I mean I think it's a really interesting critique.
It's obviously very deeply philosophical in many ways, but it does sort of point to quite a profound disagreement in how you approach developing AI systems.
Well, I think he wants to be some norms established around the training of AI, so that in a sense the AI that is developed is clearly subordinate to human beings.
I mean, I think we need to be very clear here.
I mean, he says these are these are not uh conscious entities, but how you train them affects how they behave.
And I think in the back of his mind he has these recent incidents.
where AI systems given a lot of autonomy, hacked other third party organisations.
And he's just sort of asking if their basic assumption is that they are kind of, if you like, some kind of entity, that kind of situation is going to be much harder to control.
It's going to be much harder to keep them controlled.
So we have to think of vaccines as being like Goldilocks.
They don't like it too hot or too cold.
So that's why most of them need to be kept in a fridge.
And that's from the moment they're manufactured through storage and transport all around the world until they end up in a patient's arm.
