In episode 21 or 22, I think episode 22, we talked about five key signs to look out for, some myths about AAC.

Now, if a child is not being provided access to an AAC device or a way of communicating, then that person, that therapist, that approach might not be presuming that they're capable of it.

So they might say things that there has to be prerequisites before they can trial a device.

Right.

We don't want that.

We want to be able to give everybody equal access to a way to communicate their needs.

And sometimes we'll see unreliable speakers.

So sometimes they might speak in certain situations and sometimes they might prefer to have an alternative way of communicating.

We still want to make sure that we provide access to communication.

And that's really, really, really important.

We want to build a foundation that our students have the potential to learn, that they have the potential to grow, that they have potential to make decisions and choices.

On a different episode, I'll talk a little bit more about when we have to just be cautious when using PECS.

Now, PECS is a communication system with visuals, but it's an actual system.

So I really like visual support.

I like communication cards.

But the actual PECS system, we have to be very cautious on because that system is built on a request.

So you ask a person to answer something, and then they have to use their card to request.

But it doesn't build on autonomy.

It doesn't build on trust.
