It's been something that has
um lured me and vexed me and uh made me think about so many different things philosophically in life ever since I I did my Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship in Winston-Salem and uh Dick Stevenson, uh some of you may know, uh he was uh my fellowship director and
He um I went to him one day, I was rounding at the inpatient hospice unit and I just had a day where like three or four family members in a row for different patients had come up to me and said, you know, how long is this going to be?
Like how long do you think my loved one uh is going to live?
And you know, this is a hospice house.
We had pretty much all these were pretty open conversations about mortality and prognosis.
But I just found myself
Um
really struggling with why did why did I get all these questions?
Like how am I supposed to know?
I I've never really had the training and yes, I'm interested in this and I've done some, you know, self study and some research 'cause I'm I was interested in hospice and palliative medicine.
But I I really just struggled with the essence of the question.
Like how are we supposed to know and and why do people ask?
And um he had a really great response which when I said, Well, why are they all asking me?
Like I don't know And he said, Why don't you ask them why they're asking you?
Like sh w ask the families like what
why they're asking this question and
It's not something I do routinely now, but as a learner, you know, it it helped me understand all the different reasons why people want to think about the future and and what plans they need to make um with their own lives, with their families, with their work lives.
