If I had known that everyone would keep talking about nothing else, I would never have built that damned kitchen.
Much later, in the 1980s, when I got to know her, then this kitchen was reported as the only or the most important element of her entire work.
And that then annoyed her.
And then from 1985, when I had finished my studies, me and other colleagues visited her.
We wanted to know more about her and then we also started to help her with the research in her own archive.
From the start, she was also concerned with the topic of household management, with questions like, what does daily life require and what does that mean for the design of a home?
In Frankfurt, they decided to build apartments with a small kitchen, a work kitchen.
A small kitchen was necessary, one which saved steps and hand movements.
That meant that this kitchen really only measured about 3.5 by 1.8 meters.
She designed these continuous cabinets into which she built various elements, for example aluminium bins where food was stored.
Next to the stove was a so-called cooking box.
A cooking box is an insulated element where you could place pots with pre-cooked food, cover them, and they could continue to simmer and cook gently.
The important thing was that many exhibitions were held in different cities and Margarita Schütte-Lihotzky was sent to give lectures everywhere.
My mother cooked.
I came up with this as an architect.
Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was always a working woman.
And she herself also said that she never cooked.
As she put it, I've done a lot more in my life than just this.
The Margareta Schütte-Lihotzky Center, which has been in Vienna since 2022, is located in the apartment in which she spent the last 30 years of her life.
