Sonny Shoemaker was an Air Force pilot for the National Guard. He joined the Connecticut National Guard in 1982, originally serving as a UH-1H helicopter pilot. Then he went on to the University of Connecticut where he earned his bachelor's degree. Then he went on to the University of Connecticut School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate to practice law.

Then he served in the Air Force Reserve as a regional emergency preparedness liaison officer.
