Everybody who actually knew how sick the president was had some reason not to be the person who said publicly that Woodrow Wilson could no longer serve.
So as the weeks went by, rumors naturally began to spread around D.C.
Was Wilson paralyzed?
Could he even speak?
Was he mentally competent?
Was he actually making decisions?
Who's running the government?
So finally, with the rumors running rampant, on December 5th, two senators were allowed into Wilson's bedroom.
Gilbert Hitchcock was a Democrat and a Wilson ally, and Albert Fall was a Republican and a Wilson opponent.
Their visit became known around Washington as the Smelling Committee.
because essentially they were being sent to determine for themselves just how bad things were.
Wilson was positioned in bed in a way that concealed his weakened side.
At one point, Fall told the president that he and others had been praying for him.

It's a great line, but politically you get why it mattered, right?
Wilson could still land a joke on a Republican opponent and the senators left persuaded that whatever had happened to him physically, his mind was still functioning.
And Woodrow Wilson remained president for another 17 months.
Now, he never fully recovered while in office.
And a few months later, he actually fired the secretary of state, Robert Lansing, in part because he thought Lansing was convening cabinet meetings during Wilson's incapacitation and thought that was inappropriate.
