First to taxation.

Minister for Finance, Simon Harris, has signalled that tax cuts are coming in the budget, targeted at middle-income earners.

For this piece of the show, I'm joined in studio by Cliff Taylor.

Cliff, you're very welcome.

You wrote a column last week saying, are middle earners being ripped off by the Irish income tax system?

Yes or no?

And largely because... Largely because there was nothing in the budget last year in terms of income tax.

What kind of income level are we talking about?

This is something we used to hear in every budget.

So how many people are paying tax of any people of colour?

A million.

Now, what's the size of the workforce?

It's just under 3 million.

Is it 2.85?

So roughly one in three income earners isn't paying any tax.

And when you add in PRSI and USC, you're going well north of 40%.

You're going north of 50%.

Even though the payment itself hasn't moved for over a decade, I think.

It has a vast surplus at the moment, though, doesn't it?

So they are the areas where the Irish system... So just to recap, about a million people aren't paying any income tax at all, which is quite generous.
