She was a bus driver as well as a custodian.

So, I mean, those were my roots.

I'm actually a first-generation college graduate.

Put myself through college.

My college experience was probably a little different than a lot of people's.

You went to

University of Missouri I did yeah I'm a product of the public school system and public education system but like I said I put myself through school and I wasn't able to go out and do a lot of things like go to games and like I said enjoy all the things that a lot of times college students talk about my free time was spent waiting tables making money to put myself through school and

And so after that, my husband and I came to the Kansas City area for good jobs, strong schools, and great communities.

I've always been in the Midwest.

I mean, I'm ultimately a product of this area.

And in Kansas City, I worked for several years in marketing as well as operations, actually designing and implementing budgets.

And then I ended up entering the legislature really at one of the most troubling times in the state's history under the Brownback experiment.

You know, it was not my goal to enter the legislature or be in state government necessarily.

But I will tell you, like I said, we came to the Kansas City area for good jobs, good schools.

And of course, about the time that our kids got into school, the Brownback experiment was really at the height of its devastation.

And one weekend, my oldest daughter, Sarah, and I, we went to Target.

She was probably about 12 years old at that point.

We went to Target and we actually saw one of her teachers there working on the weekend.

And she looked at me and she said, why is my teacher here stocking shelves at Target after working all week long at the school?
