The great British researcher into Machado de Assis, John Gledson, wrote a book about the deceptive realism of Don Quixote.

And it's a wonderful 19th century cafe, still open today with beautiful dark panelled walls and wall-length mirrors.

And you should also visit the Café Capitou, which is wonderful.
in Cosmi Velho, up the hill, where you can purchase a penna da galiofa, a pen of mirthful merriment filled with the ink of melancholy, which is what Machado says, what Bras says he's writing his story with.
