We run Dorper sheep, and it's all not by accident, but my son came to me when he was about 12 or 13.
He was like, Dad, I want to do something of my own.
I want to have something that's mine.
And we were trading a lot of replacement heifers at that time, females.
And I said, Bud, I can't give you enough land for you to run some cows or something on because I need it to pay for our place.
And I said, but I've got this 10 acres here in front of the house.
It's all improved grasses, coastal Bermuda.
And I said, you can have this and you can buy you some sheep to put on there.
So he had him some money saved up.
He bought 25 door per ewes.
And about half of them were bred.
About half of them lambed within a month or two.
And out of those, you know, 10 or 15 ewes that lambed, I think he had, I don't know, 15 or 20 lambs to sell.
And when he sold those lambs, I mean...
At that time, when I figured up, okay, I can run 10 ewes where I can run one cow.
We sold 12 lambs versus one calf.
Those 12 lambs sold for $2,300, you know, versus at that time, if I'd have weaned a calf, he would have brought about 800 bucks.
