It was evidence.
I could have taken it directly to the chief of police.
But I didn't.
I made many excuses to myself over the next few days.
No one would believe what you saw.
There's not enough evidence for something so outrageous.
Technically, she hasn't killed anyone.

It took her all evening and a series of little silver tools laid out in front of her, which she delicately used to remove the fragile organ.
I watched from my hiding place as she set a silver-notched spoon down beside her notebook.
It was captivating, filling me with a sense of wonder that nothing ever had and nothing has since.
Watching her do this became an almost nightly ritual.
When the loss of sleep started to bother me, I shifted my schedule to sleep during the day instead.
I began to plan other events in my life around my evenings, refusing to make plans or meet with others or even eat if it came in the way of my time spent in the white classroom.
By the time I was officially fired from my investigative job, I had long since given up any delusions of ever turning in Professor Hicks.
