I pretended that I was interested in majoring in something like her field, and let her talk and talk and talk.
We talked around the rumors for nearly an hour, before I finally brought the topic up myself in a casual, disbelieving tone, so I could watch her reaction play out in her eyes.

And then I was being ushered out.
I left her office, left campus entirely for a few hours, and traveled back when the moon was high in the sky and only a quarter of the lights in the Life Sciences building were on.
I used the keycard that university police had given me to get in, and took the stairs up to Professor Hitch's office.
It was completely dark when I stepped in, except for a sliver of dim white light
