WSJ Your Money Briefing · Why Gas Prices Aren't Falling Along With Global Oil Prices · 13 Apr 2022
podcast
for a while after oil prices shoot up.
No one wants to be the first gas station to raise their prices.
So you have a situation where gasoline prices rise relatively slowly compared to oil in the beginning and come down
as they say, like a pigeon feather on the way down.
And that's because these gas stations are always thinking about, am I going to sell gasoline at a loss if the fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine further hinders oil supply and prices shoot up again?
When you have volatile geopolitics, it's always harder for gasoline stations to know when it's OK to bring down prices.
There's also, obviously, that companies maximize profits, right?
And there's some self-interest there.
But they are also driven by competition, which anchors prices eventually.
So margins will come down over time.
And those prices will come down.
Drivers just have to be patient.
Another factor at play here is the manufacturing process.
It costs money to turn oil into gasoline.
Refineries pay oil companies.
They pay transportation fees.
They keep the lights on.
And so that refining process adds cost into the ultimate price that you pay at the pump.
Large oil companies do have some influence over the price of gasoline, but probably not as much as people think.
There's a disconnect between the handful of large oil companies that Congress interviewed earlier this month and the thousands of gas stations that ultimately set price.
