And what was Martha wearing?

Well, Martha said to my mother...

you know, you're not going down to the town like that, are you?

My mother says, well, why not?

She says, oh, you're going to wear those jeans and, you know, you're supposed to put on a skirt and heels or something to go down to the town.

My mother said, I couldn't do that in a fit.

LAUGHTER

You know, things like that where, you know, you're just kind of supposed to... And, you know, they stayed with some people, some horrible people.

I never liked them anyway, even when I lived in Scotland, but they were friends of my parents.

And, you know, the guy would sit there in a collar and tie, you know, probably maxing out his blood pressure because he had a big red face, you know, from wearing a collar and tie to have dinner.

You know, it's like, my God, why don't you relax, man, you know?

Yeah, I started to play when I was about 12, to play the guitar and I loved the guitar.

You know, I wanted to be in the Beatles, you know.

The Beatles were it for me.

I went and took lessons from a girl who was four years older than me, I think, or something like that.

Maybe not even four years, maybe two or three years older.

Her name was Alison Bell.

She was a great musician and she lived up in West Kilbride, which was quite a posh place.

And so I would get the bus up there on a Saturday and I would take lessons from her.

She taught me how to play House of the Rising Sun.
