Uh and if you look at the empirical literature, actually very interesting.

So like, you know, people report that stabs tend to have to be a burning pain.

Um uh broken things are often stabbing pains and so on.

So these descriptors don't line up very well with the type of damage.

And I argue in the book that that's probably the

There's better evidence that they line up with the kind of protection you ought to do.

Uh so that's you know, that's the sorta I think the bulk of the the more technical part of the book is going through these and trying to spell out that that content in detail and why we should expect that content to give you the variations of different types of pain.

Yeah, so I think it's right.

You know, I think these are the really pressing kinds of cases 'cause these seem to be ones

So with morphine pain, you know, as I was sort of describing with my broken ankle note there, it's not just that it doesn't hurt anymore.

Uh so it's not just that you don't have this sort of what I think is the higher order thing.

Uh but it actually seems like

people in these states aren't motivated to protect the body part either.

Uh and pain asymbolia, which is the sort of rare consequence of brain damage.

Uh you do get accounts of patients who will sort of happily let themselves be poked and burned and so on.

It's obviously kind of dangerous uh to be that sort of person.

But they will say that they feel pain.

So it seems like those are pains that don't motivate any protective action or really anything at all.

Uh and that does seem like a very strong counterexample.

So the story I tell in the book uh goes something like this.
