Comparativism can link up.
There's also actually a lot of work these days on chronic pain uh that I think fits well with this pain-painfulness distinction because uh as I take it the argument about things like, say, chronic back pain, what you really get is may even not be very much pain anymore.
What you get is the suffering becomes quite intense because you're afraid of causing more pain or this fear of injury um or re injuring something.
And so a lot of the
people are starting to realize that the strategies for treating pain and the strategies for treating this kind of long term suffering should probably be quite different.
Um
You you certainly shouldn't probably sort of keep shoveling high grade painkillers at somebody with these kind of chronic conditions, at least as the only thing you do, uh, because that's not really addressing this underlying uh problem about suffering rather than pain.
So where I'd like to take this as really kind of linking up with people who work on chronic pain and other conditions and see if it's a place where we can actually bring philosophy down to do something
Yeah, tantalizingly close to helping real people.
Ah yes.
And placebos uh it's uh uh it's pretty we don't have more time.
It's a really fascinating topic.
And again, that's a place where uh there appears to be a lot of kind of top down influence uh on suffering.
Uh plus uh placebo effects are really quite weird though.
Um
There's
Another place that's really interesting with top-down effects that I've worked with some people at my own or talked with some people at my home institution on Macquarie University, there's some people doing some good work on hypnosis.
And there's actually some fantastic work done on hypnosis as a method of pain control where they get um you know they get really quite striking results from it.
And again, that's you know, like placebos, it's intuitively uh sort of seems very weird that just by talking
to somebody in the right way, you could do such strong things.
