It used to be if you wanted to be a professional sports person, your only option as a woman in Ireland was football.
Whereas now, actually, you can play gay league to a very high level, get all that training and the representation that the GPA representing men and women have secured for you.
And then if you're good enough, you can also go to Australia.
So there's a bit of a drain on those players who maybe were crossover in the past.
put it on steroids for a couple of years and then hope that the clubs can catch up?
It's funny how all our conversations about the national team always have a little segue in the middle about the grassroots structures.
And it's obviously more pronounced in the women's game than it is even in the men's game.
And that's why I always bang on about Vera Pau in these situations.
But like, Vera Pau did a job and qualified for the World Cup, which we'd never done before.
And so therefore, there's a certain amount of credit in the bank with that.
The next stage was to evolve the team and Carla Ward is doing that now.
The one concern would be that we have a golden generation in McCabe and O'Sullivan, and they're obviously more towards the end of their career.
I'm not writing them off just yet.
I think they'll both go on and play for another number of years and another couple of cycles.
