The the Marines are a light strike force that go ashore for brief periods to seize ports and airfields and points of importance for the Army and the Air Force, but they're not a permanent ground force.

But privately he agreed with MacArthur and Ridgway and and Gavin and others that said we would be fools to involve ourselves in a land war on the Asian continent.
Eventually he was replaced by General Green, and they brought General Green in and said, General,
If you'll take the Marines into Vietnam, we'll give you everything the Army has, artillery, tanks, gunships.
And he said, Got it.
