The first update, YouTube changed how they count views.
It now counts as soon as the video starts playing, even if that's on the homepage, autoplay, as soon as frame one hits, it counts as a view.

YouTube doesn't specify how many seconds because uh it can vary from situations.
And so people can't game what that view system is.
They don't tell you the specific number of seconds.
And uh to be fair, CPMs and the revenue behind it will be based off of the old view calculation, which is now called engaged views that creators will be able to see in studio.
That's a really good point.
So I I'll pull this section directly from their uh update.
Uh their quote is: We hope that having metric parity across all formats gives creators a clearer picture of their overall exposure and makes it easier to confidently express their true scale and value to brand partners and sponsors.
it's it seems a little too doomer pilled where I I think like the the two things can be true where it's like I there are issues in terms of like I think we are ending up in a bigger barbell distribution where most money is going to the top and it's like coming from things that were middle and the bottom, but at the same time

Like all of that opportunity is still there.

Yeah, so the next update starting in February 2027, new channels will need double the long form watch hours and double the shorts views to hit partner.
So that would be going up from 4,000 watch hours to 8,000 watch hours and from 10 million shorts views to 20 million shorts views.
