While that's an overstatement, he does see himself as someone they can talk to, someone who can dialogue.

Oh, he's against it, and said so at the new Illinois conference.

He thinks those two extra dollars of funding that the rural counties are getting from Chicago provide crucial services and infrastructure.

He thinks leaving would be cutting off your nose to spite your face.

And he puts the issue in more populist terms.

Ford says the issues facing working people, food deserts, health care, they're the same across Illinois.

But his solution, a progressive tax on the wealthy, it's a non-starter for conservatives downstate who are allergic to taxation.

So the impasse holds.

This was a big question for me, too.

Everyone I asked in the movement, they denied any kind of racial animus behind their work.

But LaShawn Ford had an interesting take on the question.
