You know, that's a great question because I didn't know what was possible. I grew up in Indianapolis, right? So the Indy 500. My mom worked at the racetrack. My dad retired before I was born, but he was doing television locally for the track and stuff like that. So I was always at the track, but I thought these guys were just like superheroes. They were my superheroes. I was like, they were put on this earth. They didn't get born. They just appeared and they were superheroes. And

It only got serious though when I started to turn like 14, 15. And then you win some things and it seemed to be going the right way. And then my dad handed me a mechanical engineering book. He's like, read this. And I was like, I'm doing like algebra. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with this. But that was the path. He knew what it took to make it in this sport. And like any other sport, you're probably playing in middle school. You're probably playing in high school. You're probably going to play in college. And it's similar in racing. It's a similar path and amount of years.
before you actually can get to a pro level and make it a job. Right. What's the worst crash you've been in? Oh, man. Thankfully, I've never been severely injured, I think, but there have been some hits. There's one crash in Texas with my friend Joseph Newgarden. He's a 500 champion twice, but I spun into him and I broke his collarbone on his hand.

You can just jump out. It's impressive where we've come, I guess. Safety. You were saying that you had to learn mechanical engineering. Does every race car driver have a physics and engineering background? Sort of, because you want to get the best out of your car. If you talk to your engineer, every driver's got an engineer, and you're going to work with that guy to make the car better every session. When you talk to him, you kind of have to be able to describe, hey, the car's not turning how I want it to turn,
Give me some options. Let's talk about what we can do. And you're going to adjust the springs. You're going to adjust the toes, cambers, whatever it is. Ride heights, geometries. There's a whole list a mile long. We're not just getting in and driving and hopefully me driving better. It's like we're going to work together as a team. It's very much a team sport to kind of give me the best package on race day to show up and win. And it's not always the right one, but you want to try to use all your practice days to make sure that you understand how to get the best out of it.
How many practice days do you guys get? For the 500, we actually get more than any other. We have April 28-29, we run two days at the speedway to get everything going, get the rust off, get things a little bit loose. And then race practice week, we have four days in a row of practice. So Tuesday to Friday. Friday is fast Friday before qualifying week. And we have two days of qualifying, another day of practice, and then another day of practice on carb day. Yeah.

We've definitely had two very, very good chances at winning. There are small things. You have to have the perfect day to win that race. A lot of people say the track chooses who wins. There's kind of like an aura about the speedway. You have to be really lucky or just have the perfect day. We've been very close, which has been awesome. The only reason I still show up is because I believe I can win that race. I think we've got a great team to do it.
