There's a great clip of Padraig Harrington doing an interview where he said that was the day that he knew he was broken because he was playing the best golf of anybody in the world going into that tournament.
And he was miles off Rory McIlroy.
But what happens is when the thing is such a fraction off, this comes back to the big, long, windy conversation me and Joe had about how hard golf is.
Oh, yeah.
Like, you look at the swing that he had.
There was no great swipe that time on 11 in Augusta.
But all it has to be is a fraction of a millimetre off centre
And if you hit the ball as hard and as high and as quickly as Rory McIlroy, and it's not right out of the sweet spot, it's Armageddon.
It's absolute Armageddon.
So like he flies very close to the sun and what you have is those two extremes and his personality matches the game.
And when you tie it up together in a bundle, that's why he's such a compelling sporting figure.
Yeah, I did an interview with Robbie Cannon, who's Rory McIlroy's strength and conditioning, or Shane Lowry's strength and conditioning coach, for one of the papers this weekend.
And he would have played against both of them as an amateur.
Like...
Robbie's like a three-time Irish amateur champion, but he said that he played against Rory McIlroy for the first time when he was 15.
And it was like straight away he knew, like he had an aura about him as a 15 year old and the way he hit the ball was just absolutely impeccable.
But I asked him about that.
I said like, but he was able to hit the ball so beautifully, even when he was a little kind of pudgy kid.
And he said he wasn't really, he just, it's like he didn't play kind of soccer or anything like that growing up.
So he wasn't that athletic anymore.
