that if you book a car and your flight is arriving in at five o'clock in the evening and you've booked the car to pick up at six o'clock in the evening, and if your flight's delayed by three hours or four hours, you might miss the collection window.
So you then rock up six hours later and the car hire company's closed and you think, no bother, I'll collect it in the morning.
You go to the airport in the morning and they say, we've given your car away.
and you have absolutely no comeback.
So not only do you not have a car, you've paid for the car.
So it's really important to keep an eye on the collection windows and when you have to collect the car, but also to inform your car hire company what your flight number is, what your arrival time is, and if there's any delays to mail them
or to try and phone them if possible to say, my flight has been delayed by five hours, hold my car.
If you don't do that, they can and sometimes do give the car away and you've got no comeback.
And then obviously car hire companies are notorious for hitting you with extra charges once you get home.
It happens all the time.
And they'll say, oh, look, there was a dent in that car.
And now that's 700 euro or the hubcaps are scratched.
That's four and a half thousand euro.
And they will take the money off your credit card.
So you've got to be very careful about that.
So one of the things, the simplest thing that you can do is when you get the car.
you just take your phone out and you film yourself walking around the car.
I do that too.
So at least if there's any damage to the car when you get it, you have a record of that damage existing before you took the car out.
Also try and leave the car back when there's a human being there and make sure that you're there as they inspect it because then they have to sign off and say it's all good or it's all not good.
