Then, on the 19th of July, 1984, Mary is working at the register.
This woman, she walked up to Mary's register with a basket,
As Mary walked up the stairs to her manager's office, her head was spinning.
Mary's at genuine risk of losing her job here and having no money.
But she held her head high and she stood firm against management.
And so Mary and some of her colleagues, they walked out of that door and went on strike.
They formed a picket line outside the shop.
Except the problem is Dunn's store is quite big.
It had more than one entrance.
And because there was about 10 of them striking, it was hard for them to create like a solid picket line at each entrance.
But people would ask them what they were doing and they had answers.
But not everyone in Dublin understood the strike and exactly what they were boycotting.
Some people just got the complete wrong end of the stick.
The first black person Mary met was a gentleman by the name of Nimrod.
Nimrod was born near Johannesburg and had sought political asylum in the late 1970s.
And he'd heard about the Dunn Stores workers and he came down to the picket line.
And then one day Nimrod explained apartheid in the best way I think I've ever heard.
In 1984, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a man for his stance against apartheid.
Desmond Tutu.
His journey to the awards ceremony in Oslo, it actually involved a stopover in London.
