The president has said he wants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to keep the guarantee in case of a public offering, but he hasn't been clear exactly on how that would work.
Separately, the head of the FHFA in the past has suggested that Fannie and Freddie could remain under conservatorship even while conducting an IPO of their shares.
But that also hasn't been clarified exactly how that will work.

For one thing, these companies have a lot of cash burn.
Think of how expensive it is.
This isn't building a piece of software.
This is trying to send rockets to the moon, potentially.
This is a very cash-intensive industry.
So it makes sense to want to be public, to want to have a regular access to the capital markets to be able to raise more money.
Also, I would say from an investor point of view, let's be honest, what is the hottest or one of the top three hottest markets?
private companies out there right now that everyday investors can't get their hands on.
It's SpaceX.
And these types of companies, from what we hear, provide almost a proxy for the everyday investor who can't buy a share of SpaceX.
Then maybe they can get involved in the space race this way.
