They had nothing to fear from competitors.
They knew the regulators wouldn't come after them.
They were even at the point where they were like less worried about losing staff.
I mean, obviously now they just hate their staff and wish they would all be replaced by chatbots.
And so they were just untethered from discipline.
And in the absence of consequences, the bad idea just was the one that won the argument.
This is the fault line.
So it's funny you raised that.
So I work for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, so a nonprofit that works on digital rights.
We have allies in South Africa who work on these issues related to IP and digital rights and surveillance and all these things.
And I was, you know,
latest round of updates to the copyright law there included the expansion of the limitations to copyright to match the American set.
So what we call fair use here, which would have made it a lot simpler for like university teachers to teach and high school teachers to teach and, you know, photocopy course packs to all these things that are just kind of normal.
And the US trade representative was like, no, that American policy is very extreme and you shouldn't have it here in South Africa.
Yeah, it's great.
So at EFF, when I started, I watched tech companies really have their users back.
This was sort of the Napster era.
And there was this kind of broad sense that we should not make it really easy to remove content from the internet because then people would censor stuff.
You need an evidentiary standard.
We shouldn't just spy on people.
