Chen Cheng had numerical superiority and fought with determination, but numbers alone could not cancel the difficulty of assaulting a fortified Japanese position under air attack and against fanatical resistance.
Time worked against him.
Everyday lost increased the chance that Japanese relief efforts would arrive from Hunan.
