As Chinese pressure tightened, Japan's wider situation around Changsha deteriorated.
Fatigue, supply strain, and losses accumulated.
When the Japanese began retreating north, relief efforts turned Yichang into a desperate struggle marked by shifting fronts, poison gas, and street fighting.
Chiang Kai-shek demanded a deadline, forcing Chen Qiang into final assaults that ultimately failed to secure a clean victory.

In late September of 1941, fighting in China had become a brutal struggle of endurance.
Japanese forces kept pushing forward, but China, though battered by heavy losses, refused to yield.
Help from abroad was slowly beginning to matter.
American aid reached China through groups like the Red Cross and volunteers later associated with the Flying Tigers offered crucial support to Chinese operations.
Against this backdrop, Chiang Shan and Huanan became the center of a dangerous autumn campaign.
Chiang Kai shek and the national's leadership treated the city as strategically vital, knowing that its fate could influence the wider course of the war.
In the end, the resistance at Changsha showed China's key advantage, that being resilience.
The city's defenses helped slow the Japanese advance, break up momentum, and create uncertainty as the campaign continued.
