Each jacket uses somewhere between ten and twenty lobster shells, shells that would pretty much be going in the rubbish otherwise.
And speaking of trash,
Once the jacket has reached the end of its life, it'd be fully compostable.
If his prototype jacket does work, Alomgur has bigger plans.
He wants to make kitazan everything.
Kitazan plastic wrap or what I'd call cling film, even kitazan computer frames.
So imagine if he could make milk bottles, that would be then degradable, they'll go back to nature.
This all sounds great, but there's one more problem with kitesan.
really very, very few people who are doing this transformation, turning chitin into kitozen.
And the reason for that is that this process is really dirty.
It requires the use of a lot of
Corrosive materials, it creates uh solution in water, but that is very toxic and cost a lot of money to dispose of.
Audrey decided to attack this problem from the chemistry side.
Could she make kitosan out of chitin without using any liquid solvents that create the toxic waste?
And she figured it out.
She mixes the chitin and the other solvent chemicals together as powders rather than liquid, and lets them sort of cure in a warm, humid oven, and that triggers the same reaction.
The chitin becomes kitazin.
And there's no leftover toxic liquid waste.
But in the process of solving that waste issue, Audrey says the kitazin is even better than before.
Made the old way, kitazin would dissolve in water and acids.
